Gynecomastia Questions and Answers

Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction surgery may sound strange to anyone who doesn’t know the pain that gynecomastia or “man boobs” can cause.

Male Breast Reduction

Male breasts are no laughing matter, the condition known as Gynecomastia can be a source of great trauma for the men who suffer with it.

Breast reduction for men is usually done as a surgical procedure as a day patient under anesthetic. The severity of the surgery will depend on how bad the individual has the condition. Sometimes it can be as simple as having some liposuction to remove the extra fatty tissue from the breast area, while at other times it will need full on plastic surgery.

Male breast reduction and female breast reduction are performed in the same way so the recovery time will usually be the same. You can expect to have some bruises and swelling in the area of the procedure there will also be soreness, all this is to be expected as the procedure is an invasive one.

For a man to decide to have his breasts reduced is not a small thing, you will have to wear a pressure garment 24 hours a day for the first week or so (your plastic surgeon will give you exact times) then later on just at night. Make sure to follow the advice you are given for after surgery care, you want the soreness to go and the bruising to subside without leaving behind any problems caused by you not following your Dr’s instructions.

How Long Does Male Breast Reduction Take?

The operation can take as long as 3 hours, it will depend on how bad your Gynecomastia is and what it is caused by, while it is usually just a matter of liposuction to remove the extra fat cells from the area there are occasions when it is a more serious operation.

If you have a glandular disorder that is causing you to have Gynecomastia then the surgery may take longer, make sure to ask as many questions as it takes for you to feel comfortable before you have the surgery.

One of the main reasons that men don’t have this surgery is because they are so worried about the cost of gynecomastia surgery, and there is no way I can tell you that it is cheap because it isn’t. You may be able to get some help from your insurance company but it can be hard to get them to even consider your claim for male breast reduction.

You will need to get your dr to explain how it is affecting your mental state as well as your physical feelings if you have any hope of getting them to pay for your male breast reduction surgery.
